FFN Addicts Anonymous Temporary Refuge

Since Fanfiction Net and all its forums are still down, and I am suffering of serious withdrawal, I thought I made a post to tell I am alive, and to hopefully hear from other deprived addicts. This is the third day in a row I was not able to post on the forums. I managed to log in, briefly, today, and tried to post a post, but as soon as I pressed send, it was eaten again. This glitch seems to stay awfully long.

Does anybody knows a site where we could make an easy-to-run, easy to manage forum? I am seriously starting to open one up elsewhere. :(

(On the other hand, it is good to be back on lj, for a bit, again.) :)

It's good to have you back! *hugs*

I've got a half-dead forum on InvisionFree, but it's PG-13-restricted, so I don't know if you'd want to use it, although, IIRC, you are registered there. If you think it could be of any use, I can try to engage registrations again - hopefully, the idiots who were posting disgusting pr0n and other spam have gone away while it was unavailable for them.

*Hangs head* Yes, I fear I have spend far too much time over there, and far too little here, this whole last year. *blushes* Still, how pitifully addicted I am I learned only now when FFN was out of order for three days. I fell into withdrawal immediately. Addiction is a sad thing, isn't it?

Thank you for the invitation, and yes, I should check back there. However, what I am looking for is something where taking care of spam and spammers is easy to do - we have had some very unhappy experiences on FFN with those. Still, I shall check Invision free out, too. Technically, the FFN forums are rated PG 13, too, after all.

*HUGS* back to you! :)

I always used Proboards. I have old PB's going back 7 years with everything still on them. I've never had any problem with them at all in any I've opened or been a member of and I use them as an external back-up for my chapters, in case my HD melts or something.

They're also very easy to run and customize, even for me. It's just an idea, although there are others, I know. But if you don't want to build your own site, they're the easiest option.

I've run and co-run Adult ones, and other people have, if you put a disclaimer at the beginning, although in theory you can be reported. But anything suitable for FF.net forums is probably deemed safe.

Moonfruit is an easy-ish way to build a site, or Geocities.

I thought about starting a board at proboards, but Randy says they have an access problem. And they do not seem to send out e-mail alerts. What I am looking for is something with single threads for discussion topics, but the possibility to find all threads easily, and to pin some threads and keep them on top of a site so they can easily be found again. FFN forums have been pretty easy to manage, in this. Posts on lj, for example, may get a big number of posts, but will then drop into tzhe depths of memory in a few days.

Where's Moonfruit?

I have never had any access problems with Proboards, myself. And you can pin topics on Proboards. It shows a little pushpin at the top. They were always reliable, so I always use them, of course now it is just for myself, but the old one I was on was massive, thousands upon thousands of threads and pages.

Here is Moonfruit

Thank you - looks more likre a site-building software than a hosting site, though? Still, I shall check it out, too. :)

LOL, maybe an extended visit to Mirrormere will help? It's always my first stop for slash, what else could a girl want:)

I'm not too knowledgable about forums (haven't used them in years), but the question is probably: what do you want in regards to features and what are you willing to suffer through (adspace-wise *g*). You could go for a hosted board or host your own. Webspace isn't all that expensive anymore - and it's a lot more fun to just do your thing that to work around what your board provider isn't providing:)

Hi, Michelle! An extended visit to Mirrormere will feed my need for slash, but not my addiction to chat with my friends - I need lj and FFN, for that. But I aprecuiate the advice - Iit has been too long sindce I spent an evening or two, there. :)

Nope. Unfortunately, me = most stupid user. I could go for a hosted board, though, and will start looking into some; but me hosting a webserver would be a pitiful thing, as soon as the first glitch or bug was showing.

I admit I've never really used ff.net for anything but reading and commenting. I don't usually "chat" on the site, it's too bulky for that in my opinion.

In any case. Just after I had posted my comment yesterday, the thought hit me that you could easily hijack Skyehawke's forum. (It has a huge spam problem at the moment, so I hope the admin will close it down for members some time soon to clean up - normally it doesn't look that messy.) There is actually a LOTR subforum there, which doesn't see any use: http://forums.skyehawke.com/viewforum.php?f=67

Do that. The forum is there for fandom discussion and general chat, but it's rarely used.

Have you seen this, Aislynn? Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but it's here at LJ.

Thank you, NiRi! I saw and read a bit, yesterday, but had not much to add. At least, I got the info who is the owner of the domain from there. Well, at the moment, it seems to work again. *Knocks on wood*

ZOMG, I never noticed.

Offline life has been eating my online existence. *wails*

No idea about forum software, sorry. :-(

(THIS would be the time when the OTW forums to be would come in real handy, huh?)

OTW-forums? There are some? FFN has decided to work again for the moment, but I am open for suggestions should they cease to do so, again. It would need to be a place that could be easily managed, had good ways to block spammers and delete spam, and had an option to send e-mail alerts. All that is what makes FFN forums so easy to use, among other things.

Yes, I've read your latest blog entry. I have to say, I admire your willingness to organize that international museums day for free (or did I get that right) on top of everything else. I fear I would be less enthusiastic.

Hope your muses will decide to play again, soon! (Mine seem to be pretty unwilling these days, too, though.)

There are supposed to be forums or something at some point, I think...

Re: the Museum's Day -

that's simply part of my mini-job turned micro-job as museum manager...

I'm not doing it for free, just nearly so. *sigh*

Hi! ::waves:: Sorry I don't have any suggestions but there ought to be some other options around. Good luck in finding one!

Hi, samtyr! Well, for the moment, FFN seems to have decided to work again, but unfortunately, ift may happen again. It would be great to have an alternative where to go in such a case, although a community or something on lj may do, in a tight spot, too.

My understanding is that you're not the only person having problems with FF.net. I beta read for someone there and she has been off the site for three days also.

By the way, crowdaughter, I found the story "Bound" on Aduldfanfiction.net. Thank you so much for sending me there. I also see that she has a sequal to that story there but it needs updated. Thanks for your help.

Everyone had problems and could not log in, except a few cvery determined people who kept trying. But at least, it brought me back to check on my lj, again. :)

My pleasure! I like the original story, a lot, and I wished Bluegold would update her sequel, someday. :)

Yikes! This is truly serious withdrawal. Five months! Is there anything we can do? Perhaps a blood transfusion?

Have truly enjoyed this all along the way, but it would be great to have another chapter 'pop up' unexpectedly.

*Snort! A blood transfusion? I am most touched and delighted to hear to which lengths you would go to get another chapter of my fic, but I fear a transfusion of a mixture of a long, prolongated holiday and a good amount of confidence would help much better. But I hear your pain, and I shall firmly tell myself to get something down on paper regardless those inner voices which doubt that anything I write is working well enough, and just batter through. I fear I have been victim of this new bout of writer's block for long enough, now. :(

Sorry! And I shall do my very best to produce that missing chapter - promise!
